Waking up & Getting up with depression

When suffering from depression getting up in the morning can be the hardest thing to do.

I know when I had my darkest days all I wanted was to keep the curtains closed, stay in bed and binge on TV. The concept of getting up to face the world was an exhausting thought! However, these actions I just mentioned are damaging to you.


Let’s start with motivation.

When you’re motivated in the morning the chances are high that you will have a productive fulfilling day.  What is the actual definition of motivation? Well I believe it’s an internal and external factor that stimulate desire and energy in people, to be continually interested and committed to attain goals.

Yet when we are at our lowest, we have such a problem with motivation. Letting the mind tell us that staying in bed is the better option! Guys, it 100% is not! I knew this and started researching how to simply get out of bed productively in the morning! I struggled to find anything that was easy and simple!

Let’s together set the right state of mind and body, with a good morning routine to tackle the day.

I wanted to share some really easy habits you can ease into your morning routine. They are so simple and easy, it’s a great starting point to build a better you. Training your mind in the best possible way to realise the day ahead of you is going to be a great day!

1. Wake up 2hrs before leaving the house

To start with set your alarm around 2hrs before you need to leave the house. This will allow you plenty of time to not be rushing around frantically, helping you to complete morning rituals you like to do. The morning should be the time you spend on your mental and physical preparation. This will have a big impact on your day.

2. Let the light in

Please, when your alarm goes off, open the curtains and let the light in! 

It is so easy to give up if you choose to stay in the dark, it will seem comfortable and your mind will persuade you to stay put. Instead, let the light in, have some hot water and lemon (or a coffee) and read a book or magazine on paper. Stay away from your phone and the TV for at least 15-30 mins when waking up. Inspire your mind, don’t poison with social media or negative news to start with.

3. Make your bed 

William H.Mcraven says this about making your bed “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another. If by chance you have a bad day, you will come home to a bed that is made, that you made. A made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better”. Incredible and yet so simple.   William H.Mcraven a retired united states navy admiral.

4. Rehydrate with passion

With passion you say, how do I do that? I love a glass of fresh cold water and with what I call herby Ice cubes, there prepared with rosemary and mint. I down this like its gold in the morning, refreshing me tremendously. Seriously, you need to hydrate to invigorate your mind and body function; if you feel sluggish it’s likely because you are suffering from de-hydration with a headache, tiredness, dry mouth, lips and eyes.

5. Activate the brain

I like to activate my brain and get excited for the day. Here is an activity I will spend around 15-30 mins on. I will write down my thoughts along with what I want to achieve that day, this will focus on what will help me grow as a person. I learnt after going through some really dark mornings writing down what I wanted to achieve, gave me a new purpose, for this I used a thoughts journal.


5. Eat Breakfast

I am not going to lie to you eating breakfast can be really difficult for me. However, the difference in your eating habits and energy throughout the day is incredible when you eat in the morning. Depending on what you can handle (Banana or the classic avocado on toast), JUST KEEP IT HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS.

6. Final habit of the morning: Activate the body

This final habit will come easier to others and most likely be the most inconsistent habit. If you can include in your morning routine some time to be active no matter how big or small. This will improve circulation, boost metabolism, and release those wonderful endorphins.

  • Try the below 5 Yoga poses in the picture
  • Simple stretches in the morning
  • Small workout to get the blood flowing
  • Short walk to get some fresh air in your lungs
